For the month of October, Tyler Mason is partnering with Sheltering Wings to raise awareness for Domestic Violence in our community. We had them join us at a recent staff meeting to teach us the warning signs of domestic violence and how to provide support for those that are victims. We found out that abuse can look different in every circumstance and usually falls under these six categories: Emotional, Economic, Physical, Spiritual, Digital, and Sexual. We also found it important to know how to provide the proper support for victims. The main goal is to start a conversation that’s based in love and support. It’s important to remember that they don’t need to admit to being abused – they just need to know you see that they may be unhappy and that you’re available to talk if and when they are ready. When they do confide in you here’s some steps you can take:
- Express Concern
- Reassure them it’s not their fault
- Be supportive and non-judgmental
- Help them develop a safety plan
- Remember it is ultimately their choice to leave
If you need immediate help call the Sheltering Wings 24/7 helpline at (317) 745-1496 or for more information, visit shelteringwings.org.
If you haven’t heard of Sheltering Wings before they provide emergency housing for families in our community who are experiencing any form of domestic abuse and helps them to build stable, independent lives. They have been serving Hendricks County, and beyond, for over twenty years. Over 16,000 women, men and families have found bright futures through the continued efforts of the Sheltering Wings team.
We are honored to be supporting them this month by collecting items from their wish list that go directly support those who are seeking refuge from their situations. If you would like to participate, you can find their wish list HERE. Bring in any of these wish list items before the end of October, and you’ll be entered to win 2 field level Colts tickets to the January Colts vs Houston game at Lucas Oil! We’re excited to partner with you in giving back to an organization that directly helps women, men and children in our community.
